with Anthony Iannarino as the keynote speaker - a truly remarkable sales guru. His wealth of experience and precise delivery of information always leave me inspired. So, when he was asked what one thing salespeople shouldn’t do, his response floored me: “Stop falling in love with your product.”
That statement lingered with me. How could I not adore our offerings? Sharing new releases with our customers through email blasts is how I connect with them. But as I reflected on his words, I realized that what works for him may not work for me. As someone deeply passionate about our products, not falling in love with them would be like closing shop. After all, that passion and excitement are what drives us.

When I “walk a show”, I am there for hours and do my best to visit as many booths as possible. With my fully charged iPhone in hand, I snapped many of the great corporate gifts and branded products to remember the good stuff. Upon returning to my home office, I review them quietly and “piece it all together” like a puzzle while referencing my notes on how these products fit into marketing campaigns, incentive travel products, attendee gifts and a multitude of other uses.

I was debating whether or not to write about the promotional products/gifting industry, but I decided that it was timely to do so.
When I was invited into this industry 30 years ago, it was referred to as “Ad Specialty.” If you think about it, it’s an appropriate name because the advertising or the message a promotional product sends is specialized. An actual product is branded and given away. No other advertising method does this. It wasn’t called “swag,” it was also unfortunately referred to as “trinkets and trash,” which is a terrible name because it slanders an industry and my livelihood. Hearing clients refer to the promotional industry as such, sent shivers down my spine. I knew instinctively that this customer wasn’t serious and I didn’t like the negative connotations that name conjured up.
When I opened Red Scarf, I asked myself how I was going to change this attitude towards the industry? How will I differentiate myself from my competitors? I knew I had some work to do.
For example, one of my observations was the lack of colour and style in the apparel that was offered. I presented coloured denim shirts from one of my fashion vendors, instead of black, blue and green. If I wasn’t excited about selling a product, how on earth could I ask my client to buy it? I stopped trying to be like everyone else. My focus was my client, and I was interested and passionate about the order so I could provide creative solutions using relevant, high quality products. Even in the 1990’s, the customer experience had to be top notch.
Corporate giveaways and gifting will always be an important component in the marketing sales mix for several reasons. Firstly, it’s a physical takeaway. There should always be a reason that a specific product is selected and given. Products tell a story whether they’re on the high or low end of the scale—they send a message and the recipient gets an instant impression of your company.
The bottom line is a branded product can make it or break it in a few seconds. Your company will see great returns from their investment or this product will be disposed of in a matter of seconds. And that is being brutally honest.
Clients need to listen more and trust an industry professional that is knowledgeable, insightful and possesses an understanding of marketing and sales. After all, that’s all we do, day-in and day-out. We are privy to a lot of information to ensure clients look like superstars.
Relevant, high quality products have a long shelf life. It doesn’t disappear like a commercial. The recipients’ senses are engaged, they brag about it, strive to get another one, wear it, eat it, listen to it, or share it. The product keeps on working.
In tough economic times, it’s more important than ever to keep your brand top of mind, not scaled back. Make sure your brand is in the hands of your customers and employees. As a communications vice-president of marketing once told me when I started my company, “if you’re not top of mind with me I will forget about you.” I have never forgotten those wise words.

It’s becoming more important than ever to build TRUST and INTEGRITY in your brand. Employees and customers will want and expect safety, reliability and longevity. What will your employee or customer feel when they think of your brand?
Logistical challenges in inventory and skyrocketing transportation costs are a reality.
If you’re considering a specific product for a campaign, ensure the product is in stock for uninterrupted and seamless execution. Give yourself plenty of time. Have a Plan B and C to fall back on.
Staff shortages mean longer order processing and production time. Many suppliers’ employees and/or CSRs are still working remotely and are not able to walk away from their workstations and walk to the production area to check and provide an update on an order. They have to rely on emails for communication and provide order updates such as proofs and ETAs. Production and shipping staff are also limited.
Employees and their families have adjusted to companies being part of their family life on a day to day basis. The entire family has to be considered and rewarded for accommodating this disruption in family life.
Keep your employee engaged and ensure collaboration among the team and the company. Even when restrictions are lifted, some will still be working remotely. Keep your employee happy, positive and optimistic. They are important and valuable to the growth of the company. Isolation is a recipe for illogical emotional decisions that may impede growth and cohesiveness.
Wellness and mental health are of paramount importance to most. Any type of item that provides stress relief, enjoyment and a level of relaxation while working, mental breaks, physical stretching and a feeling of well being and contentment. These positive feelings will encourage better productivity. Gifts you may want to consider: yoga mat, plug in diffuser with essential oils, meditation pillow, candles, aromatherapy item, a nature scene imprinted on a product that makes the viewer" relax and breathe”.
This word has been used frequently in past years in the gifting industry but now it has taken on a different meaning. Lifestyle gifts now have to include family members, even the pet. Consideration for every family member is regarded as a considerate and thoughtful gesture. During the Pandemic, companies have become part of one’s family. Any type of large snack bowl with an assortment of confectionary, along with a blanket and a puzzle for everyone to enjoy. In summer months a pass to a camping ground with all camping equipment will be well received, a picnic cooler filled with food and beverages for a family hiking day and don’t forget the solar power banks with a built in flashlight! Anything BBQ would work as well. Again, the message of “relax and enjoy yourself” is a meaningful and heartfelt message.
This trend isn’t new either however as technology moves so quickly, it’s important to keep up with the newest gadgets recipients love. If it makes their workday easier and provides faster productivity, then it’s a must have in the eyes of the recipient. This is an important one. During the Pandemic, most of us longed for the simpler things in life and to experience joy from the small things again. Food does this so well. Snack kits with a non alcoholic beverage, popcorn bowls filled with movie type of confectionery such as liquorice, peanuts, and a variety of sweets. Simple yet very effective especially during long zoom meetings or virtual town halls. Munching while engaging is ok. If you wan to kick it upon few notches, try a virtual chef’s cooking class, a horseback riding lesson, a meditative retreat or a sleep under the stars with a top notch sleeping bag. Sunglasses that have a video feature are fantastic for that special golfing tournament. Make someone’s dream come true and make it amazing!
This trend will be moving forward with impact and importance. Products that have a story attached to them, a “give back” to a top of mind cause. We all want to feel good about what we purchase and this is one of the ways to feel we made a worthwhile and important contribution. There are products available with codes to register your purchase and then be directed to supplier websites that let you know how and where your dollars are being spent. Recipients and customers want to know how the product is made, where it’s made, if child labour or animal cruelty is part of the process, and if the world is further polluted by the manufacturing of the product being considered. Transparency is expected by those who buy and those who receive. People want to contribute to goodness and kindness in the world. If this positive message is achieved, it can only mean great things for the company.
In conclusion, gifts are now bridging the gap in meaningful and impactful ways. We’ve all been apart and separated, gifts fulfill an important need. Never have the words gratitude and appreciation meant so much as they have in the past two years! Consistency and longevity are the building blocks for a rock solid foundation and are more important than ever for reassuring employees and customers that business will continue and bonds will be stronger regardless of difficult situations that arise.

]]>Having been in business for nearly 30 years, there are certain practices I uphold and live by religiously to ensure success for both clients and myself. Even with all the new ways of doing business, a multitude of webinars and virtual events, and all the new technology available, my practices have been steadfast and grounded me for many years. At the end of the day, they provide me peace of mind.

Whether it be with a client, colleague, or supplier, communication and honesty are vital for ultimate success. I can’t stress this enough!
When communicating to clients and colleagues, one must be very clear with instructions and share every detail as it pertains to that specific order. Inform your team of any big or small nuggets of information about the client. All communication is valuable. Clients must be updated, and suppliers must know the entire scope of the order as it relates to their task. If this doesn’t happen, we inadvertently set up our people to fail. Time, energy, and money are precious commodities that we cannot get back.
Do your part to be forthcoming and honest with your clients and team. It is crucial to be honest in your ability to meet your client's needs.
There have been times when a client’s request was completely unrealistic and I knew it. But, I didn’t listen to my gut feeling. As a result, I set myself up for failure.
Some clients are very strong and adamant as to what they think they want; however, it may not be what is best for them. Remember, you are the expert. That’s why they came to you in the first place. You must articulate, and explain your reasons in a way they’ll understand.
Preparation is key. You need to do your research before you reach out to a client. Research their target audience, competitors, vision, mission, and values. There is nothing worse than missing the mark, or trying to pitch a product or service for which they have no need. The client will know if you have done your research first or not. Not researching the company beforehand illustrates laziness and lack of preparation. Do your homework.
Remain neutral and never take anything personally. My mentors always taught me that when a client is having a bad day, it’s something on their end, not what I’ve done. We tend to blame ourselves. Do not jump to conclusions or be quick to react. One slip can destroy your entire career and business.
Do not gossip or speak badly about anyone or another company. It’s none of your business, the business at hand is your business. Focus on yourself.
Stay on task, focus, and expedite requests efficiently. You will soon realize efficiency is a huge component of profit. If you’re not making money, ask yourself; how much time do I spend on an order? Phone calls, texting, doodling, and social media are huge distractions, and should be avoided during work hours. Set aside short time blocks for social media breaks if needed.
Spelling and grammar are key for polished first impressions. There is nothing worse than fumbling over your words, or sending out an important document with grammatical or spelling errors. If you are unsure of how to spell a word, pronounce a name, or whether or not a sentence is grammatically correct, ask an expert. Don't be afraid to ask for help. For instance, there are several free writing tools available online. One of my favorites is Grammarly. Find tools and resources that work for you and make you shine.
Address the Client Appropriately! Never use “Hey”, acronyms, or abbreviations when speaking to clients! Always maintain a level of professionalism even if they don’t.
Create a routine that works for you. Start and end your day at a specific time. Plan your week and craft a schedule that works for you, and that you want to stick to.
Do you know what they say about assumptions? They make an ASS-out-of-U-and-ME. Never assume anything, always assume nothing. Assumptions are business killers!
Be consistent, reliable, and trustworthy — always keep your word and stick to your promises. If you make a promise, and then later realize that it wasn’t a good decision for whatever reason, you still must follow through and learn for the next time. Your clients will trust you because you’re viewed as stable and steady. They can depend on you and know they’re taken care of. Trust is everything.

When building relationships with clients, there’s no better way to tell them that they’re appreciated than with a gift. ]]>I had the privilege of working with my dearest friend Joan Willms when she invited me to her farm to be a willing participant in the FEEL (Facilitated Equine Experiential Learning®) program through her new business, Turquoise Tohi. My first thought was…oh no! I didn’t want a therapy lesson!
After a few heated discussions with myself, I decided to jump in. What the heck, where was I going during COVID-19? I had time! I had 4 lessons with two horses and the "AHA!" moment was revealed in my third lesson when Jackson, the horse, didn’t understand what I wanted him to do. He stood there, looking at me. I had arrived that morning stressed and confused, and the horse knew it. The lesson consisted of stops, starts and mixed signals from me. The energy wasn’t flowing. It was one of those off days, and I thought the lesson was a failure. However, Joan gently indicated it was quite the opposite. The horse revealed something about myself.
I remember years ago, my spiritual mentor told me change can happen in a heartbeat or it can be a process. This day, I experienced change in a heartbeat and everything was very clear to me. Like someone clearing the path for me, guiding me in the right direction. My change happened in a heartbeat with this magnificent horse. It was not a therapy session; it was empowerment like I have never experienced before. As I drove home, my career and life flashed in my head like photographs. This session unlocked suppressed memories and emotions I never knew were there. Can you guess what was revealed? Hesitancy.

During this uncertain time, it’s about helping each other and relieving stress for a customer whenever possible. If a supplier is only interested in the order, this is a clear indication that they aren’t there for you during the long haul. No one knows how long this pandemic will last so we have to ensure that we have a reliable partners we can count on to ensure success for all.
If your supplier doesn’t offer fulfillment and drop shipping, ask them if the know of a company who does or you may have to find one in close proximity. Google to the rescue! When you find a company who can perform this task, ask them what they need and ask them to describe, step by step, how they will execute the job and which courier company or companies they intend to use. Depending on the destinations, they may use more than one company. They will ask you what level of service you’d like to use…standard or an expedited.
Remember: the faster the service, the more expensive the shipping charge. This is to your benefit as you will have realistic expectations for timelines and cost. Review your list and respective destinations, the farthest destination would be shipped first as the transit time is longer and you may not have to use an expensive overnight service.
When a client reaches out for our Red Glove Service, we spend days and days thinking about the best way to execute efficiently because every order is so different and unique! The most important step for us is contacting our courier and asking how they can help. We can then assess how long it will take to package and wrap the products, then we calculate approximate transit time, (with a few days cushion), for each region if the packages are being sent across the country and cross borders. Since we don’t want to enter every single name to generate a waybill, is the courier’s system technologically advanced in generating waybills or does every contact has to be entered manually? I’m referring to that nasty piece of paper with bar codes folded in half and inserted into a clear pouch. Every single package has to have a waybill. This is how the package is identified.
Ask your courier what way the information should be sent to them or do they prefer another method. Delivering a package with the wrong information is very frustrating. Couriers cannot be expected to do this job for you, you have to provide accurate and exact information.
Couriers work on their timelines, not yours. This is why the information has to be clear and accurate! An expectation such as a change of address and delivery for the same day simply won’t happen.
Don’t ever lie on a commercial invoice. If you’re cross border shipping, commercial invoices have to be included and this can get tricky. Getting step by step assistance from your courier would be very helpful at this point, to ensure all information is entered correctly and boxes are all checked. If information is missing and boxes are sporadically checked, customs will flag the shipment and detain it. Border Services are much too smart for any nonsense. Especially during COVID, your company will get a warning or two then it will be blackballed.
Couriers do not deliver to post office box numbers. Only the mail service does this. Don’t forget about those people living in rural areas!
There will be a lot of shaking, throwing and sliding of packages during transit! If there is a breakable item, you may want to replace it or ask your fulfillment company to secure it in a thick bubble wrap. Any Thank You cards should be inserted in the box, not on the top of the package as it may disappear.
Ask questions! Presentation and delivery is a reflection on your company. Provide as much information to your supplier as possible to ensure a smooth execution. The last thing you want is a broken or damaged delivery, or worse, no delivery at all.
These are just a few points to be aware of if you’re thinking about drop shipping an order. There are significant details that surface for each and every order because a customer’s needs are all very different such as staggering some deliveries.

]]>When the pandemic was announced, most of us went into shock mode. I know I did. The news all around me was like a soundtrack in a bad movie, so I went to another place in my head and carried on working.
I quickly gave my head a shake and the first thing I thought about was that I had to continue my routine or it would be disastrous in the weeks to follow.
I’m glad I did. Despite what’s going on in our world, it’s been a very creative and enlightening time for me. COVID-19 has forced me to take a step back and re-evaluate what’s important to me, discard what isn’t working anymore, and discovering my true passions. How should I move forward in this new normal? Will our lives ever be the same again? I also realized that our world is trying desperately to heal.
That saddens me. The human race has a lot of work to do.
The promotional products and gift industry, like the rest of our economy, has been greatly affected by the pandemic. Both distributors and suppliers have had to find new products that relate to current times. It’s unfortunate though, that many companies don’t see this as an opportunity to stay in touch with their customers with products that work hard at keeping the corporate brand top of mind. I recently watched a documentary called California Typewriters and I must say, I found it fascinating. It was one of those documentaries you get drawn into and watch in its entirety. You don’t even want to check your mobile device for any messages in case you miss something really important, a tidbit of information you didn’t know that may even change your life! Sometimes, all it takes is one sentence someone says and the penny drops. I know the penny dropped for me.
That’s how excellent this documentary was!
I remember the clicking sound of various typewriters in grade school, high school, offices and in many places in my travels during my youth. The sound of keys hitting the paper was a sound I never forgot. It meant something to me. It was a serious sound and to the person typing the letter, it was private information not to be disclosed except to the recipient. There was no peeking over a shoulder either, that was forbidden.
Another observation was that the person typing seemed to be in another world, not multi-tasking like we do today. She was usually focused at the task at hand and it had to be completed. The look on her face was do not disturb and you waited.
Grammarly and spellcheck didn’t exist and the people that typed were educated in proper, precise grammar and spelling. No shortcuts! Sentences were typed with the correct punctuation, the layout and margins were carefully aligned and when the document was removed from the typewriter, it was a masterpiece! At least that was my memory of a typewriter, its function and how people used them.
A few points in the documentary are well worth thinking about. First of all, using a typewriter encourages the process of creativity. Thoughts and words flow, there is a certain sound the keys make when they hit the paper. They smack the paper. The ink is “stamping” your thoughts and words onto a surface. This is ultimate privacy. The information belongs only to you unless you want to share it, your information isn’t stored in a hard drive...have you ever retrieved information from a hard drive? Exactly! Typewritten paper can be compiled and saved in a bundle and stored in a safe and secret place in your home. Stacks of paper are bound or stuffed inside a journal. You want inspiration? Go back to your notes. You’ll be amazed! This was my process before the computer, I still have notes in a folder or tied with a ribbon and I know where all my hopes, dreams and disasters are stored. To me, the typewriter is like a secret friend that knows your most creative thoughts and sometimes your deepest and darkest secrets.
I own two typewriters, an Underwood from the 1940’s and a compact Remington used in WWII by a war correspondent. The Remington was gifted to me by a wonderful woman whose uncle was a Canadian journalist working overseas during the war. It is a very special little typewriter. If those keys could talk! What would they say?
What would the Smith Corona from the 1960’s reveal? Just the design of these machines reflect massive social change and the revolutionary times that were sweeping society. There are some very sexy-looking Smith Coronas out there!
While we still rely heavily on our computers, there is a simplicity about a manual machine and the intimacy that technology will never match. I think the difference between the digital and analogue worlds is that digital technology keeps calling you while a typewriter waits for you and your muse to appear.

I hope you’re all enjoying the incredible summer we are having. There is much to be grateful for! I really believe that.
In my last post, the Be Clean. Be Kind. Safety Kits were introduced. I'm so excited about this kit. I truly believe it can introduce the concept of health, hygiene and safety to kids. While hygiene has always been a priority for all of us; COVID-19 has really brought out the necessity of teaching it to our kids as early as possible.
The Be Clean. Be Kind. safety kit was inspired by my Grandson, Matti, who is only 18 months old ❤️. He is already learning the importance of hygiene. The kit was created for children aged 3 - 5 and those young parents who are sending their children back to daycare.
Even though we are more relaxed during the summer, our thoughts are still on the necessary preparations for children going back to daycare in September. Parents are concerned and I understand the concern.
Along with teaching our children hygiene and safety, we must also teach them that we need a better world. Change has to happen with them as they have the incredible ability to do this one step at a time.
The world needs to move forward with kindness and compassion, toward each other and toward the animal kingdom. My concern is that when children grow up, they won’t know an elephant 🐘 or a tiger 🐯 and possibly many other species.
If we continue to ignore these very serious issues, it will not be a nice world for our children when they become older. They’ll be asking us a lot of questions.

I hope everyone is staying safe, healthy and motivated despite COVID-19. One thing is for sure, we have to keep moving forward!
I would like to share my experience as a business owner during the 3 month lockdown. It has been a very interesting time. Many doors have opened, some have closed and the necessary adjustments are sometimes uncomfortable. My incredible and tough sales mentors, (who taught me early in my career) would say: Take responsibility, live with it and move on!
As some of you may know, I started Grow Green Gardening with the intention of selling garden plots to those who have never gardened and the plan was to provide education, workshops, recipe exchanges and asking some experts such as chefs, local organic farmers and natural meat companies to visit the property and engage in some interesting discussions. It would have been a great time to meet other people and kids would have been busy with their own little gardens.
Everyone would have been enjoying a day in the country and relaxing.
COVID-19 decided it wasn’t going to happen and my plan was only partially realized. Instead of complaining (which sometimes makes me feel better), I moved forward and planted all 10 garden plots.
Billy, my partner, built the garden beds, we carried 11 loads of top soil to each garden bed and away we went…planting our hearts out!
Have a look at some of these pics, especially the tomato plants. Some of this produce will go to Food Banks, some will be sold online and some of it we will eat. The taste of a fresh picked tomato is a real treat! All the seeds and transplants were organic including the top soil that is rich in nutrients.
I had help from Marjo at Niemi Farms and my dear friend Google. The process of planting, watering, researching plant spacing / plant companions and watching our garden grow was a magnificent journey! I loved every dirty minute and I highly recommend it.

COVID-19 has certainly made so many of us fearful; it is a stealth and sneaky virus, and the question remains: what’s next? It is certainly a moving target and the uncertainty is very stressful.
While watching and listening to updates, I realized how fearful Moms are to send their children back to school in September. So I sat and thought…what would I want for my kids if I were a young Mom in today’s pandemic? What could my kids take to school with them everyday to ensure their safety and hygiene?

]]>I entered the promotional products industry by accident, recruited by a lovely woman who was impressed by the way I sold her a nasty plastic buckle while I was designing leather belts and handbags for a private retail label. Shock and disappointment were the only two words to describe my feelings when I entered that office the first day and was confronted by a world of boring white mugs and black pens. I soon realized that the promo industry desperately needed a shot of creativity—something I knew I had to offer. A year-and-a-half later, I opened Red Scarf Promotions, selling what I loved and providing personalized, creative solutions to a corporate customer.
In the 25 years I’ve been in the industry, corporate clients have come to better understand why expertly chosen items are important to their bottom line and their company’s reputation.
But I’ve noticed a disturbing trend that’s chipping away at that: self serve. Instead of providing personal service, vendors send their clients online to filter though endless websites and product selections. Without a care about clients’ individual preferences and business needs, vendors are promoting a one-size-fits-all solution. This is a clear illustration of complacency and lack of creativity on the part of the vendor. Where are the salespeople who should be providing product options, creativity and discussion? They’ve been replaced by account managers whose job descriptions don’t include these vital tasks.
Without a salesperson’s expertise and personal service, disappointment is bound to happen. How is a client supposed to know what imprints will and won’t work with certain items? How can they confidently choose a gift without a sample? How do they know if delivery dates are reasonable?
In corporate gifting, it actually the thought that counts: the experienced, knowledgeable thought of a professional who understands the impact of a well-chosen gift—and who knows that a poorly-selected item can damage a business relationship or send the wrong message about the giver.
We need to put greater emphasis on the customer experience and return passion and creativity to product selection. Technology certainly has its place in the process, but let’s not allow it to replace the magic that happens when a client and salesperson really get each other. That means picking up the phone, grabbing coffee and really communicating and listening. Yes, this process does take time initially, but is well worth it. Please, let’s not go back to a world of white mugs and black pens!

Dear Journal,
As you may remember from my last entry, I figured out that colour was missing in the Corporate World. Bland was THE colour of each and every year! Clients needed to know they had many colour choices.
As time progressed and I was in up to my elbows selling, I also made another discovery. Why is everyone always using the same decorating methods?
Surely there must be a way to step it up a few notches using some interesting ways to imprint.
It is fair to say that technology for imprinting wasn’t as advanced as it is today. It seems every year, suppliers showcase the latest and the greatest ways to imprint a logo and the best part? The integrity of the brand is not compromised.
Now that’s a good thing. It tells me suppliers have done their homework, they’re listening.
I digress…I remember an event planner at a communications company once mentioned to me that people think event planning is easy. She said, “they plan a birthday party and think they can plan an event on a massive scale”. Not so! I never forgot that comment. I, for one, never ever thought that. I couldn’t plan an event to save my life.
Red Scarf executes promos and gifts for planners, but we absolutely don’t plan events. The reason I’m mentioning this is that it’s similar in the promo business.
As the years passed and I was selling consistently, dealing with challenging logos, suppliers who broke promises and products that wouldn’t “behave”, I realized how challenging this industry was, and still is.
We have the same type of people in our industry. We call them “trunk slammers”. They bully their way into a client with every trick in the book, they receive an order for a white mug, print a one colour logo on it and think they’ve mastered the industry.
Not so!
Those of us who are serious about this business do not work that way. I’m sure, seasoned clients recognize these types of salespeople.
Beware of a vision of watches stacked up their sleeve wearing a trench coat. It is not a pretty picture. Truly a “trinkets and trash” salesperson. Unfortunately, they exist and give this industry a negative reputation.
Why am I mentioning this? Because clients who are serious about their promo and gift purchases, deal with serious promotional product and gift suppliers.
There are many stories of clients ordering from an overseas supplier to purchase a large quantity to save a few bucks, but I have never heard of a happy ending.
The overseas supplier’s “yes” to a royal blue was really a turquoise that was not acceptable and monies paid are long gone. It was all wrong! Who was there to guide the order between supplier and client?
Overseas suppliers reach out after 9 pm, when their business day begins. That’s when business, with all the important details, is hammered out. Conversations are still going on until the wee hours of the morning.
There are many valid reasons why promo distributors are important to your vendor marketing roster.
Another point I would like to make is that you can line up 24 distributors in a row and each one will have a different take on what the industry means to them and how they service a client.
We all have our niches and our specific talents. There are distributors that only sell calendars and pens and are tremendously successful. What works for one distributor doesn’t work for another.
We try very hard to find the best products that possess value and most importantly, we do our best in making it easy for clients to view and select products.
We do the shopping for you and we will not ask you to peruse through countless websites, you don’t have time for that.
Furthermore, most clients do not understand specific jargon that only a promotional products distributor would know.
If you have a page of 40 water bottles, which one would you select? Probably the one that is visually appealing but that may be the wrong choice for your needs.
Self serve is great for some things, but this industry requires careful, strategic planning and an experienced hand. Clients deserve to be serviced from start to finish.
With everything on your plate, why would you want to do this by yourself?

This past June marked the 25th year Red Scarf Gift Co (formerly Red Scarf Promotions) has been in business. Our little Mohawk Man wearing the Red Scarf decided it was time to hang up his hat, or should I say his red scarf?
Looking back it has been a wild and exciting ride!
I started my business at 38 years of age (which was already considered old) and it was NOT my world. I was working at Opera Belt Co on Spadina Ave designing ladies’ belts and leather accessories for Retail Private Label.
The belt business was slowly declining as the retail chains were all going to China and our wonderful company simply could not afford to stay in business.
That was a very sad time. Great quality in exchange for cheap, landfill products. What can I say? Luckily, I already had my foot in the promo business part time.
After the doors closed, I went home, went downstairs to my basement, sat at my desk and called one of my belt clients at Canada’s Wonderland and received an order for 2000 Hanna Barbera buttons. Gotta love Fred Flintstone!
I had to keep it going to ward off depression and sadness. One of the worst things in business is when the momentum stalls out. That, to me, spells disaster.
I made a few appointments and after meeting a few corporate clients, I thought I was going to sell pencils on the street!
I asked myself, how the heck am I going to sell a white C handled mug and a pen? This is so boring! What have I done? I really ought to go back to the fashion business.
It was amazing to me that clients in the corporate world did not have the gift of visualization or a shred of imagination. They couldn’t visualize red, purple, orange or any colour for that matter!
This was going to be a long and hard journey. No one laughs! There must be an opportunity somewhere…
Good Lord! Where do I go from here?
As I sat in my chair, depressed and unmotivated, I asked myself: what do I do best? What do I love? How am I going to change and differentiate myself from the crispy jackets and calendars of the world?
I realized that if I was going to make any money at all, I would have to change the way business was done, at least between Red Scarf and Mr. or Ms. Client.
I mentioned opportunity… there was a gap that needed be filled. It was staring at me right in the face. The first thing I did was pick up a phone and reached out to my fashion world for some washed denim shirts that were colourful and beautiful! Comfortable, easy to wear, they were corporately acceptable and certainly a refreshing change from the crispy, slippery textiles that were currently available that I couldn’t stand touching.
The gap that needed to be filled was an injection of colour. No one was showing any colour except for: black, navy, green and burgundy….yikes! Clients needed to see there were other possibilities and that they were not restricted to those boring colours or apparel!
A “shake up” was in order.
I called Bell Canada, spoke to a VP of Marketing (I think), and asked for an appointment. The name of my company was intriguing and had something to do with the fact that appointments were easy to get, however, it’s fair to say that the phone was the only way to reach out to new clients and cold calling was perfectly acceptable.
That was 1995! Bell Canada clients jumped at these beautiful shirts and not only was the phone ringing off the hook, Red Scarf Promotions received preferred vendorship status from Bell that lasted a magnificent 15 years. As I previously mentioned, it was an exciting and wild ride!
How did Red Scarf get its name? Only a few bold clients asked me this question during the 25 years and it is a big secret!
